Common Plumbing Misconceptions Cleared Up
Deciding how to handle a plumbing issue gets easier when you separate marketing claims from practical piping mechanics:
"Chemical drain openers from the hardware store are fine for minor clogs." Caustic drain chemicals sit inside the P-trap or pipe sag, creating intense chemical heat reactions that soften PVC joints, melt glues, and corrode cast-iron lines. If the chemical fails to clear the clog, it leaves a standing pool of harsh acid that creates a safety risk for plumbers clearing the line manually.
"Tankless water heaters never require maintenance or flushing." While tankless units save space and supply continuous hot water, hard Middle Tennessee water bakes scale onto the delicate internal copper heat exchanger. Without a routine annual descaling flush, mineral crust leads to thermal shutdowns and premature unit failure.
"A backed-up main sewer line means your lawn must be dug up." A main line backup does not automatically mean a full excavation is needed. In many cases, mechanical cable rodding, hydro-jetting, or targeted trenchless spot repairs restore full drain capacity without disturbing driveways or landscaping.
What to Do During an Urgent Plumbing Failure
If a pipe bursts or a main sewer drain backs up suddenly, taking these immediate steps helps limit property damage while help is on the way:
- Shut off the main water supply. Locate your home's main shut-off valve, usually found near the water meter box in the front yard, inside the garage, or near the water heater, and turn it clockwise to stop incoming water.
- Turn off power to your water heater. If your main water supply is shut off, turn off the electrical breaker or flip the gas control valve to "Pilot" on your water heater to prevent the tank from heating while empty.
- Avoid using fixtures during drain backups. If water backs up into a tub or lowest floor drain, stop running water in sinks, dishwashers, or washing machines until the main sewer line is cleared.
